Far superior to round shelves, small square shelves are a great way to add space to your room and cut down the clutter in your everyday life. Great for storing your valuables or showcasing collections, square shelves are inexpensive and able to fit in virtually any room of the house. Great for single items such as a picture or a vase, and also perfect for a myriad of different items that need to be used, but should stay out of the way on a daily basis. When installing or building square shelves, it is important to have the right tools around, many of which are power tools. With only moderate difficulty, you can build your own square shelves or simply purchase them at an affordable rate. One of the best ways to store items and create a more welcoming feel to a room, these shelves can be made using very little time and are simple enough for virtually anyone with building experience to make.
The first step to making your own square shelves is by cutting a piece of wood that measure six by six inches and are a perfect square with 90 degree angles. Because square shelving uses a basic design, it’s pretty simple to learn how to build square shelves. Use a circular saw to cut the wood and make sure to measure and make sure the dimensions are correct. If you have the tools and the expertise, it’s even possible to cut multiple pieces of wood at the same time and create more shelves in one sitting. Once you’ve cut out the desired number of pieces (three or four per shelf, depending on how you will mount them), sand the edges so that they are smooth and splinter free. Do this by either using an electric sander, or regular twenty grit sandpaper. Many individuals prefer the electric sander, but the process can be completed just as efficiently with regular sandpaper.
Depending on your décor, you will want to paint the wood to have it match. Paint each piece individually and completely and leave it in a cool dry place until they are completely dry. Although this is optional, many experts recommend paining simply because the finished product will look better and the extra coat of paint will protect against the elements and damage. Once you have your pieces painted, it is time to assemble the shelves. Lay the first piece of wood down on a flat surface and stand the second one at the bottom so that it is pressed up to the edge of the first piece. If you are doing it correctly, it should produce a 90 degree angle. Hammer the two pieces of wood together in this position and repeat the process for the other pieces. When all steps are completed, the result should of course be a square. If you are planning on putting your square shelves on the wall, you will need four pieces, and if you are looking to stack them on the floor, three pieces will work just fine.
